Ben and I went to Palm Springs last week and ate at two fine establishments, so we are going to tell you all about them! We know that we started this blog dedicated to restaurants in Los Angeles, but we are Mouthbag and we do whatever the eff we want so we're starting with restaurants in Palm Springs. Mouthbag has a life of its own. We have created a monster. Like cookie monster. Just, not communist. Anyways, as for Palm Springs there are a lot of restaurants in that area and most of them aren't that great, so feel lucky that we're doing this.
Wang's In the Desert
First of all, we have to tell you how gay this place is. In a really great way. Palm Springs is known to have a thriving gay community and which is essentially why I wanted to go and why Ben wanted to stay.
So for starters, they were pushing their award winning "Beef Mu Shu Wonton Taco" appetizer and we had to go for it. Super crazy concept... it was a cultural grab bag and we're into bags so we were stoked. It was okay. The actual Mu Shu was good, but putting it into those ridiculously small shells was pretty crazy and we weren't really into it. Plus it came after the rest of our meal was over so Mouthbag had moved on emotionally.
For the main course Ben had the Spicy Shrimp Curry with Tiger Shrimp, white onions, carrots and peas which was really good. Paisley had the Sweet and Sour Chicken which was forgettable. We actually just spent 10 minutes trying to remember what she even ordered. But now she is remembering that it was pretty good. It was a pretty unassuming restaurant with pretty decent, kinda obvious chinese food but it made us happy. Nothing to change your sexuality about ;)
The next night for our 3 Year Anniversary. Yeah Mouthbag loves each other. And it kisses each other. Yup. Those are sentences. Love you.
For our 3 Year we went to Roy's in Rancho Mirage. Now Roy's isn't exactly some underdog restaurant. It's been around for a long time and there are a few of them hanging out in different parts of the country and i believe there's one in Guam. I thiiiiink one is opening up in Los Angeles this year. It's Hawaiian Fusion food blending Pacific Rim flavors with European techniques and it's really really great. Roy Yamaguchi is way talented and is Hawaii's first recipient of the James beard award. Anyways here's what we got. Check out the change in Mouthbag's tone <3>
* Fire Grilled Szechaun Spiced Baby Back Pork Ribs - Which are unbelievably good.
* Crunchy Golden Lobster Potstickers (with Spicy Togarashi Miso Butter Sauce) - Which were also great.
* Vegetable Sushi rolls - Good
* Tuna and Avocado Poke - Great
* Wood Fired Tiger Prawns - Unbelievably great!
The definite highlights were the Prawns and the Ribs. Totally up Mouthbag's alley. Moving on to the main coursesssssss...
Ben got the Parmesan Potato Herb Crusted Halibut with Arugula Pesto Risotto & Blue Crab Beurre Rouge. It was great. Yamaguchi totally came through on this one.
Paisley got the dish on which the Roy's empire is built... the Roasted Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi-Mahi with a Lobster Cognac Butter Sauce over mashed potatoes. So good. So very very good.
And then it was time for dessert. Roy's does not have a lot to choose from as far a dessert is concerned, simply because it knows you're only gonna order one thing which is their Signature Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé with homemade vanilla bean ice cream and raspberry sauce. It takes about 35 minutes to make so you have to order it right at the beginning of the meal. And it's really worth it. So impressive. And since it was our 3 year anniversary the staff surprised us with an additional dessert. It was a coconut panna cotta with fresh pineapple and kiwi and a lilokoi dressing which was also great and paired nicely with the souffle.
The coffee was cold but aside from that Mouthbag was extremely into Roy's and gives it a very strong recommendation. We haven't really figured out a rating system yet, so for now we just encourage your going there. Granted this isn't so much under the radar, but it is lovely. Did Mouthbag just say lovely? Oh no. I knew this day would come. And on the second entry. Damn. Gina.
So in closing, Palm Springs is strange. And if you don't want to go to a steak house, Roy's is your best bet.
And this just in... The Roy's in Los Angeles is open.
